Communication & Conflict Resolution: Break the Cycle of Constant Arguments
Shift from defensive battles to deep understanding using evidence-based Gottman Method frameworks. Available in-person at our Carlton North clinic on weekends, or online on Mondays.

Does Your Communication Feel Like a Trap?
It is incredibly common for couples to hit patches where they struggle to communicate or feel completely overwhelmed by defensive patterns. It is exhausting to feel like you are walking on eggshells, avoiding core conversations, or repeating the exact same argument without ever reaching a resolution.
You might notice your relationship falling into these destructive communication loops:
-
The Escalation Loop: A minor disagreement rapidly snowballs into a major, wounding conflict.
-
The Silent Treatment: One or both of you shuts down entirely, leaving you living more like detached roommates than romantic partners.
-
The Blame Game: Conversations quickly turn into finger-pointing, keeping score, and dredging up the past.
-
The Cycle of Avoidance: You actively dodge important topics to maintain an uneasy peace, causing you to slowly drift apart.
Relationships Squared offers a supportive, structured environment to navigate these challenges. Couples counselling focuses on transforming how you handle conflict by replacing destructive patterns with constructive habits.
Mastering the Art of Conflict Management
In Gottman Method therapy, we don't aim to eliminate conflict entirely—all couples fight. Instead, we change how you navigate differences. Dr Karin will help you identify, disarm, and replace The Four Horsemen of relationship breakdown:
-
Criticism: Shifting from attacking your partner’s character to expressing a gentle start-up about your own feelings using "I" statements.
-
Contempt: Rooting out sarcasm, cynicism, and eye-rolling by intentionally building a culture of appreciation and respect.
-
Defensiveness: Moving away from making excuses or cross-complaining, and learning to accept even a small piece of responsibility.
-
Stonewalling: Learning how to identify physiological flooding and implement constructive, self-soothing breaks before shutting down completely.

🔄 Small Shifts, Major Breakthroughs
Changing your communication doesn't mean changing who you are—it means changing your strategy.
For example:
❌ Instead of a Harsh Start-up: "You’re late again, you are so incredibly selfish and never think about my schedule."
✅ We practice a Gentle Start-up: "I feel stressed because I’m running late for our appointment, and I really need us to stick to the timeline we agreed on. Can we figure out a plan for next time?"
The Science Behind the Shift:
Research shows that 96% of conflicts end exactly how they begin. A harsh start-up triggers a biological defence mechanism, making connection impossible. By leading with your own internal feeling and a clear, positive need, you disarm the defensive cycle before it even starts.
Conflict is Only Half the Story: The Sound Relationship House
In Gottman Method therapy, we use a structural framework called The Sound Relationship House. Think of conflict management as the protective walls and roof of your house—but those walls cannot stand unless they are built on a solid foundation of friendship, intimacy, and shared meaning.
True conflict resolution isn't just about learning how to stop arguing; it’s about rebuilding your bond from the ground up. In our sessions, we balance our practical conflict work by intentionally strengthening your relationship's foundation. Together, we will work to:
-
Rebuild Your "Love Maps": Deepen your cognitive understanding of each other's inner worlds, daily stressors, vulnerabilities, and joys.
-
Nurture Fondness and Admiration: Actively shift away from built-up resentment by calling out what you appreciate and respect about your partner.
-
Turn Towards Each Other: Learn how to recognise and respond to small, everyday bids for connection and affection, rather than turning away or ignoring them.

A Note on Relationship Safety & Suitability
Couples counselling is designed for partners committed to mutual communication and relationship growth. Because safety and trust are the absolute prerequisites for effective clinical work, certain dynamics require specialized individual care first.
Joint therapy is clinically contraindicated and not recommended during active physical aggression or coercive control until individual changes eliminate violence, when there are major ongoing secrets or active infidelity, during severe unmanaged addiction or substance dependence, or when there is a lack of combined commitment from both partners.
